This Trotting Fox weathervane
was commissioned by a customer of ours in New Jersey. When in the process of
making the decision to purchase the property on which they built their home and
farm, they were visiting the location one day and saw a beautiful vixen coming
trotting out of the grasses in a field. She was carrying a single feather in her
mouth. Seeing her there was the final factor that convinced them to purchase the
land. In her honor, they commissioned this Fox weathervane (see thumbnail
photo of this famous lady above left, top). The owners have been careful stewards of the
property and her offspring still reside happily on the property.
Their Fox weathervane was
completed in 1999 and had optional gilding added to the muzzle, chest, belly,
tail tip and feather. Just recently, she sent us a photo of her vane and you can
see what a lovely patina it has developed over the years.
The thumbnail photo (upper right,
bottom)
is a version of this design that we made for a couple who have a bed and
breakfast in Kansas. We added the name of their inn in gold leafed letters,
using the same font as they use on their other promotional materials.
Fox
is a general term applied to any one of roughly 27
species
of small to medium-sized
omnivorous
canids
in the tribe vulpini with sharp
features and a brush-like tail. By far the most common species of fox is the
Red
Fox (Vulpes
vulpes), although different species are found on almost every
continent. The presence of fox-like
carnivores
all over the globe has led to their appearance in the
popular culture
and
folklore
of many nations, tribes, and other cultural groups; see
foxes in fiction.
Fox terminology is different from that used for most canids. Male foxes are
known as dogs,
tods,
vixes (plural of vix), or
reynards, females are referred to as
vixens, and their young are
called kits or
cubs, as well as
pups. A group of foxes is a
